Gustavus Adolphus College is one of the nation's leading private liberal arts colleges serving over 2,200 students. Known for its strong science, writing, music, athletics, study-away, and service-learning programs, Gustavus is located on a scenic 340-acre hill in St. Peter, Minnesota only one hour southwest of the Twin Cities.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a professional member of the Admission Office. The Admission Counselor plays an important role in recruiting and enrolling quality students to meet the enrollment goals of the College. The Admission Counselor is often the first point of contact for students and families, provides exceptional customer service during campus visits and events, manages a recruitment territory, and assists with admission decisions. The Admission Counselor actively communicates with prospective students and their families, high school counselors, and college faculty and staff regarding the application process, academics, co-curricular opportunities, financial aid, housing, and the like.

Evenings, weekends, and travel are requirements of this position.

Essential Functions:
  • Student Recruitment: Connect with students and their families both on and off campus to advise and present information about Gustavus. Actively and effectively communicate to students by email, phone, and in person to assist in their college search process. Build relationships with diverse populations and work to meet individual needs. Work with the Financial Aid Office to guide prospective students and families through the college financial aid process in both large and small group settings. Travel to secondary schools and college fairs to meet with prospective students and school counselors.
  • Territory Management: Oversee communication, operation, and travel within assigned geographic recruitment territory. Analyze recruitment data to determine travel and communication plans. Create and implement strategies to generate interest in Gustavus, help students complete applications, and ultimately enroll at Gustavus.
  • Application Review: Review all applications within assigned territory and make initial admission decisions. Communicate with students regarding application status. Provide information about students to the Dean of Admission when required.
  • Office Committees/Projects: Assist with various events, initiatives, and projects within the admission office. Collaborate with colleagues and office partners to further the goals of the division and mission of the College.


Prerequisites
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors degree.
  • Demonstrates effective communication through verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Must have a valid drivers license and access to reliable transportation.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with college admission as either a student tour guide or admission professional.
  • Related experience in territory management, marketing, sales, higher education, etc.
  • Familiarity with liberal arts education within a residential setting.
  • Fluency in a second language (Hmong or Spanish) is highly desirable.
