POSITION PURPOSE
The Office of Admission is hiring one diversity-focused team member who is passionate about and has the ability to effectively recruit a diverse student body. The office has the ability to hire someone at the admission officer, assistant director, or associate director level. Job title and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

The ideal candidate is an integral member of the office of admission staff charged with enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion via recruiting, selecting, and yielding a racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse class. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values of Whitman College. Our mission focuses on educating a broad range of talented students in a college community where everyone can participate fully in the life of the college with a genuine sense of belonging. Reporting to the senior associate director of admission, the candidate will take a leading role in implementing strategies for recruiting and enrolling students from a diverse range of backgrounds at Whitman College.

Associate Director of Admission will have oversight of strategic importance in our diversity and inclusion efforts. Previous experience of those roles with the ability to step right in and take lead on interfacing the relationships in that role.

Assistant Director of Admission will oversee process and implementation of programming and specific assignments depending on the candidate's experience and office needs.

Admission Officer will have responsibilities in admission recruitment and responsibilities as assigned.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead or assist with the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives and programs to increase the representation of underrepresented students at Whitman College as articulated in Whitman's Admission Office diversity recruitment plan.
  • Sustain Whitman's Admission Office diversity recruitment plan.
  • Work collaboratively with admission staff, student workers, and other members of the enrollment team to provide training and advocacy on matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Maintain responsibility for a recruitment territory including outreach and communication with prospective students and families, high schools, high school counselors, and other educational professionals.
  • Serve as Whitman's point person for maintaining and developing key partnerships, including but not limited to organizations that provide access to diverse populations in the college process such as College Horizons, YES Prep, Rainier Scholars, and Say Yes to Education.
  • Coordinate programs as assigned by the senior associate director of admission, including but not limited to the Visit Scholarship Program.
  • Represent Whitman in recruitment travel, visiting high schools, conducting interviews, and attending college fairs. The admission travel schedule customarily involves 4-5 weeks in the fall, 2-3 weeks in the spring, and 1-2 weeks in the summer.
  • Serve as a representative for the college during national consortium travel (i.e. Colleges That Change Lives, Northwest 5,).
  • Give public presentations on Whitman College and the admission and financial aid process, on and off campus. Articulate Whitman's core values and distinguishing features.
  • Coordinate support of constituencies (alumni, current parents, current students) in assigned recruitment areas and in support of Whitman's goals related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Review applications and make recommendations on admissibility of candidates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, develop and maintain collaborative relationships with a variety of individuals and groups.
  • Possess critical and analytical reasoning that can be applied to strategy, tactics, travel, applications, and programs.
  • Exhibit sound judgment, strict confidentiality, adaptability, and sensitivity in dealing with prospective students and parents, high school counselors, and other constituencies.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, show flexibility, and respond effectively to evolving work situations.
  • Openness to travel and comfort working in various geographical locations.
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Have excellent public speaking and written communication skills.
  • Be willing to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must have computer proficiency.


    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • The successful candidate for the admission officer role will have a bachelor's degree and some experience in an admission office, including student work in an admission office.
  • The successful candidate for the assistant director role will have a bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of higher education or admission experience.
  • The successful candidate for the associate director role will have a bachelor's degree, master's degree preferred, and at least 4 years of higher education or admission experience.
